Am new to looking at old tables, but dont the leafs usually go across the width of the table?

I recently inherited a solid wood dining room set. It is not too old, prob 10 years or so from an upscale US manufacturer. The horizontal surfaces are stained, and the vertical surfaces and legs are painted. It is in perfect condition, BUT smells of cigarette smoke! I thought it was just the chair cushions, but no...Is there a remedy for smoke odor that can be used on both painted AND stained wooden surfaces?

I'm looking to buy and new dining room set. I like wood but the last set we had was very soft. I think it was pine. Anyway I'm looking for a durable wood that would be good with a little one. Any ideas?

I was advised to use gel stain by Home Depot. But it really isn't working. I sanded the spots first and now need to find a stain that will repair them. Please help!

Hi there...My husband and I are considering buying a house that has very light oak? cabinets, and black granite counter tops...The kitchen is open to the dining area, and our existing dining set is the dark espresso colored wood...will it look odd right next to each other? Is there anything I can do to make it flow better other than getting a new table? I can't have a table cloth on it because we have a 1 year old, and she will pull it down. Thanks!

I just bought a new dining set (wood) that I have to screw the table legs to the top. I can get them in almost all the way with the allen wrench and then they just wont budge. They won't go in all the way and get tight...help?

My parents gave me a new wood dining set, to replace the card table I was using for a dining room table. It would be very nice, if it weren't such a light stain! My home is black and red colors, so I would prefer a dark stain, or if it were painted black. Can I just paint over it, without doing any prep, or is there an EASY way I can darken the wood? If I did just paint over the whole thing, how long would the paint last?
